Alright so here we go I know not everyone’s going to agree with everything in this review but it’s ok, at the end of the day it’s just an opinion and you should always watch a movie solely on whether you want to or not. With that being said the Safdie brothers deliver a fast paced, anxiety ridden but enjoyable ride throughout the 2 hour and 15 minutes of nailbiting and heavy feeling movie. With stars like Adam Sandler, Lakeith Stanfield, and Idina Menzel and studded with pop ups from names like The Weeknd and Kevin Garnett this film carried so much hype and anticipation that it would be hard to find someone who hasn’t heard about it. With the massive pressure like that on a film, it’s not always a recipe for success, but I think it pulls it off mostly. This movie follows a jeweler who Gambles his earnings away in the world of high stakes sports betting. It’s a rush from start to finish as you follow him going through his day, making anxiety ridden decisions and desperate movies all in the hopes of pulling off a massive score. This movie is not for the faint of heart but is a real gem to watch. I will say it is not the best film of the year, mainly because it has a lot of holes and is very hard to watch. Also, really I think if they had picked any other leading man and he did just as well, we wouldn’t even know about this movie. While we know Adam Sandler is actually a gifted dramatic actor, it still seems that was most of the draw of the film. While a great film, the choice of lead protagonist actually may take away from the film by the distraction of how well his performance is. I give this one a 8 out of 10.
